Roles bifurcate in large enterprise and regulated contexts

Claim

In large enterprises and regulated industries, AI may produce role bifurcation rather than convergence: a smaller tier of elite generalists who define harnesses and systems, and a larger tier of commoditized execution roles whose tasks are increasingly AI-mediated and narrowly scoped.

Rationale

Large organizations have structural incentives to specialize and stratify. AI may reinforce this by making junior execution cheaper (not eliminated), while concentrating judgment and autonomy at the top among those who define the harnesses, specs, and validation regimes. (The distinct question of whether automating entry-level work narrows the senior-talent pipeline is now tracked in Claim 5c.)

Supporting Signals

  • ADP payroll data showing routine cognitive tasks declining faster than manual ones, with larger effects in bigger firms.
  • Stanford "Canaries in the Coal Mine" paper: specific task categories declining while orchestration roles grow—but growth is concentrated at senior levels.
  • PwC 2026 two-track signal: "professionalised" judgement-tier roles growing 2x faster (42% faster wage growth) than "democratised" execution-tier roles.
  • Senior engineers absorbing disproportionate review/verification burden from AI-augmented output (emergent stratification).
